Spaying & Neutering

Every year more than 3 million stray cats and dogs are euthanized in the United States. We want to do our part here on Maui to prevent any more of these useless deaths. That’s why we feel it is so important to get our animals spayed and neutered as soon as they are finished with their puppy and kitten vaccinations.

Spaying & Neutering Benefits

Besides overpopulation, dogs and cats are at a higher risk for hormone-based tumors the longer that they are not spayed or neutered. Dogs and cats age at a faster rate, so they can develop cancer earlier because they reach their senior years as early as age seven. Statistics show that female dogs’ breast cancer risk increases to 20% after their first heat cycle, and then it increases to 80% after their second heat cycle. Female dogs go into their first heat cycle at 6 months to a year of age, so that is why we recommend spaying females between 4 and 6 months of age. Males are prone to getting testosterone-based rectal tumors called adenocarcinomas, as well as testicular cancer and prostatic hyperplasia. These are all greatly reduced, if not cured, by neutering males between 4 and 6 months of age.

Safety Precautions During Surgery

This may be the only time that your pet may undergo surgery, so we want to make it as safe as possible. We use similar gas anesthesia as they use in human hospitals. We also recommend an IV catheter and pre-surgical blood work. This gives us the most information prior to anesthesia about your pet’s organ function. Pain control is also crucial in order to help speed healing and keep your pet comfortable post-surgery. Of course we will go over all of these options prior to your pets spay or neuter.

Genetic Testing

No matter the size, age or breed of your pet, Wailuku Pet Clinic recommends neutering or spaying them if they are not being used for breeding purposes. If you do want to breed your animal, we can schedule appropriate tests to insure that they are of the best breeding quality to pass on the best of the breed standard. We can help recommend the appropriate tests for your dog to help rule out genetic problems such as hip dysplasia, allergy problems, heart disease and congenital eye problems. This will ensure that your dog does not have any breed specific problems before passing it on to the next generation.
